What to expect in your first session.
Let’s Start with a Conversation
Before we dive in, I offer a free 15-minute consultation- either over the phone or in person. This is a no-pressure chance for us to meet, talk briefly about what’s bringing you in, and see if we might be a good fit to work together. Choosing the right therapist is important, and this step is about giving you the space to explore that.
Your First Session: A Closer Look
Your first official session is what’s known as an intake session. This is a standard part of most therapy practices and gives us a chance to take a wide-angle view of your life- what’s going on now, your history, and what you’re hoping to change or work through. This is the foundational work of the therapeutic process: gathering the information needed to understand the whole picture.
We’ll talk about:
What brought you to therapy
Current stressors or concerns
Your personal history and important relationships
Patterns or change you’ve noticed
Any past experience with therapy
What you want your life or relationships to look like going forward
What goals you have for your time in counseling
You don’t need to prepare anything in particular. Just come as you are. This is a safe, judgement-free space where you’re welcome to share at your own pace.
After the First Session: Tailoring Therapy to You
Together, we’ll begin crafting a treatment plan that feels right for you. Whether you’re looking for support in navigating a specific challenge, healing from trauma, or working toward long-term growth, we’ll set goals that are meaningful and attainable-and adjust them as needed along the way. I draw from a range of evidence-based approaches depending on your unique needs.
Moving Forward
Therapy is a process-and the first step is just showing up.
This is your journey. I’m here to walk with you, support you, and help guide you through the process in a way that’s both thoughtful and intentional.
